00:05
hi
00:06
my name is rebecca tower and i'm the
00:07
director of executive education here at
00:09
the university of san francisco
00:12
it has been our great pleasure over the
00:13
last 10 plus years
00:15
to host literally thousands of people
00:17
from all over the globe
00:18
to come here visit us in san francisco
00:20
and immerse themselves in all things
00:22
silicon valley.
00:23
whether that's learning entrepreneurship
00:25
or innovation
00:26
leadership business analytics digital
00:30
transformation or many other topics.
00:33
this was up until just a few months ago
00:35
when i'm sure like for most of us
00:37
our lives changed - that being said here
00:40
at the university of san francisco in
00:42
our executive department
00:43
we decided we'd practice a little bit of
00:45
what we preached so we've jumped in and
00:47
over the last
00:48
several months we've been creating
00:50
testing honing
00:51
recreating different versions and
00:54
different formats of programs
00:55
to come up with what we believe is the
00:57
most engaging
00:58
and inspiring immersive programs
01:01
available in the virtues
01:02
as such it is my great pleasure to
01:04
announce today that we are launching
01:06
a new program in business analytics and
01:09
we are joined today
01:10
by one of our partners from durham
01:12
university neil armstrong
01:14
he is the senior manager of
01:15
international engagement and he's going
01:17
to tell us a little bit about
01:19
what this new program was like and what
01:21
it was like for the participants
01:22
so let's tune in and hear what neil has
01:25
to say
01:26
my name is neil armstrong bit like the
01:28
astronaut so uh pretty famous there
01:32
and i'm from durham university business
01:35
school
01:36
which is based in the uk it's in the
01:39
northeast of um of the uk so just on the
01:42
on the north sea
01:44
um we are an international business
01:47
school
01:53
we've been doing a series of programs
01:54
with you guys for a number of years
01:57
um where you know we've been out and and
02:00
you've
02:01
delivered programs to our students i
02:03
think one of the things that we
02:05
we really value um has been the
02:08
i think the personal relationship um
02:10
rebecca that we've had
02:12
so i've just really started working with
02:14
with yourself uh
02:15
this year but i know a number of my
02:17
colleagues have been out they've met
02:18
with you students have been out they've
02:19
met with you
02:20
really really enjoyed the the experience
02:23
the
02:23
uh and the quality of the the delivery
02:26
that we that we get from you and that's
02:27
why we've consistently been a
02:29
long-term partner with uh university of
02:31
san francisco
02:38
um i think one of the great things that
02:41
that we've done together
02:43
as to institutions as two organizations
02:46
has been massively adapted to this
02:49
circumstance
02:50
so we intentionally were hoping to do to
02:53
do that but
02:54
actually what we did is we sat back and
02:55
we looked at that though how can we make
02:58
this
02:58
program work online and
03:02
um you know for those people who are
03:04
probably sitting watching
03:05
uh watching this interview that took a
03:07
lot of time i think between um yourself
03:10
and myself rebecca around
03:11
and the one and the wider teams across
03:13
both business schools
03:15
um around bringing that to into place
03:18
discussing what it would look like the
03:20
structure bringing in the academic team
03:22
looking at all the assessment
03:24
methodology how that would be done
03:26
online how we would do that with monitor
03:28
students preparing students
03:30
there was an awful lot of uh activity
03:32
went
03:33
went into to making this happen and
03:36
what i felt really worked was how the
03:39
team working
03:41
went between the two organizations not
03:43
always easy to bring
03:45
two organizations together but i think
03:47
what what happened was the willingness
03:49
of both teams to
03:50
make things happen um to go out of their
03:53
way to
03:54
um really kind of push things forward
04:04
many of our students were from the uh
04:06
from china
04:08
um so we had a split we uh uh some
04:11
students who were
04:12
in the far east and some students who
04:14
are in the uk
04:15
and you put together a fantastic program
04:17
that allowed us to adapt to different
04:19
time zones
04:20
so i know that you guys are working till
04:22
late in the night
04:23
we were getting up at 12 a.m um
04:26
uk time all to try and just kind of
04:29
schedule these things and make these
04:31
things happen and it led to what i
04:33
feel was a really great experience which
04:35
combined
04:36
um some new content for our students
04:39
around um you know the use of artificial
04:42
intelligence
04:43
and machine learning and and a whole
04:46
range of areas like that but also
04:48
around how we communicate data as well
04:51
and which was an important
04:52
important aspect but it was also the
04:54
input of some of the the
04:56
corporate relationships and the business
04:57
relationships that you've got there
04:59
um usf the
05:02
that really made a difference and kind
05:04
of contextualized a lot of the
05:07
learning for our students and they
05:08
really got a massive amount out of it
05:16
and i think the the feedback from
05:18
students and certainly when we spoke to
05:19
them
05:19
has been good it's been really positive
05:22
that they've really appreciated that
05:25
together we've tried to rescue a
05:28
situation that was was out of our hands
05:31
um you know they've had that chance to
05:33
find out about the the cultural aspects
05:35
of being over there know you did some
05:36
virtual tours for them as well
05:38
so they could get a feel of what it
05:39
would have actually been like to have
05:41
been there
05:42
i think they really valued the content
05:45
um
05:46
um significantly around um being taught
05:49
through um different different lecturers
05:52
from a different location but i think
05:54
what they also really value and what
05:56
came back was the
05:57
the input of the companies um
06:00
and looking at how data is utilized
06:03
within their organization
06:05
and they were given some real
06:06
significant challenges
06:08
and posed some really difficult uh
06:10
questions
06:11
um that really um
06:14
kind of made them think and i think with
06:17
the structure of the program as well
06:18
obviously we worked together to make
06:20
sure that they could do
06:22
an assessment at the end and we had them
06:23
do group presentations
06:25
and obviously doing group presentations
06:27
online is not something you would
06:29
normally do
06:31
but in an environment like we are now
06:33
and what we will have going forward over
06:36
the
06:36
foreseeable future where you know i
06:38
think we'll do
06:39
less international travel probably
06:41
because we've been able to do this and
06:43
we'll do more
06:44
um digital collaboration i think that
06:47
was a really good
06:48
way for them to experience what it's
06:49
going to be like to
06:51
work in business into the future and i
06:53
think they really value that opportunity
06:55
they could see the
06:57
the benefit of doing some of that for
06:59
their future career in their own
07:01
future employability
07:08
i think absolutely absolutely i i think
07:11
the
07:12
um i think the ability to to have that
07:15
hybrid element
07:16
you know so some virtual something in in
07:19
person
07:19
some virtual i think it would i think if
07:22
we can
07:23
if we could do a pure virtual option i
07:26
think we would
07:27
equally as well um so you know
07:30
you know potentially working with you
07:32
well working with you guys again
07:34
um will be they may be the option that
07:38
we have to do virtual but i would
07:39
certainly consider looking at i
07:42
definitely
07:47
oh i think i'd just like to say i think
07:49
that if any anybody would like to work
07:51
directly with
07:53
the university of san francisco the
07:55
executive development team and yourself
07:56
rebecca
07:58
i'd highly encourage them to do so um i
08:00
just think
08:01
the the um the ease of working
08:04
um with all of you um i think the
08:08
the the attitude and just the the
08:10
openness and friendliness and the will
08:12
it
08:12
the willingness to um adapt to
08:16
the the change in circumstances has has
08:18
been brilliant and
08:19
and to all of the team as well um you
08:22
know my main reference to obviously um
08:24
cynthia who we
08:25
work with and vijay from the academic
08:27
side of things as well
08:28
you know i had the opportunity to to
08:30
listen to um bj's talk on
08:32
storytelling with data and i really
08:34
enjoyed that and i learned
08:36
an awful lot from that i know our
08:37
students did so i think just in terms of
08:39
the
08:40
the pure quality of staff the quality of
08:42
delivery uh
08:43
and in the way in which you we work
08:45
together if anybody want to do
08:47
to do this kind of work with you i'd
08:49
highly encourage them to do so
08:51
and if anybody would want to speak to me
08:52
about the quality of that directly then
08:55
they're more than willing to do so as
09:03
well
