Juan Carlos Ibarra

Professor Ibarra is an Associate Professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law. His teaching and scholarship focus on the intersection of law, property, and racial equality. Previously, he served as a Visiting Professor at USF and a Senior Affiliated Scholar at UC Law, San Francisco's Center for Racial and Economic Justice (CREJ).

In his teaching, Professor Ibarra uses a student-centered approach that emphasizes critical thinking and analytical skills. He teaches Property Law and Wills and Trusts, survey courses that provide an overview of foundational areas of law while critically examining how the law intersects with racial equality. 

Professor Ibarra’s current research addresses structural issues of racial and social exclusion and inclusion in law and public policy. His latest work-in-progress, "Antiracist Property: Conceptual Foundations," examines fundamental principles of property law through an antiracist lens. He is also working on "Racial Transcendence and Political Power," a project that examines the relationship between intergenerational wealth transfer, racial equality, and political power.

Professor Ibarra is actively engaged in rethinking legal pedagogy. His project, "Antiracist Property: Reflections on Critical Pedagogy," presents innovative strategies for integrating racial equality into core law school curricula. This work is partially grant-funded and is expected to be published in 2024-2025.
